Der Bettelstudent (The Beggar Student) is a 1936 German musical comedy-romance directed by Georg Jacoby, based on the 1882 operetta by Carl Millöcker. Set in 1704 Kraków, where August the Strong, Elector of Saxony, rules the land. He proclaims martial law because the populace is always in revolt. Colonel Ollendorf is appointed as governor of Krakow and plots revenge against the noblewoman Laura by tricking her into marrying a poor student, Simon, whom he passes off as a millionaire.
Another excellent comedy and musical. Marika Rökk sparkles. “Her steps are divine by any standard – whether the classical, tap dancing, or (almost) vaudeville – in Gasparone.”
