"Fährmann Maria" is a German fantasy film from 1936. The story follows Maria, a young woman who becomes the ferryman in a small village after the previous ferryman dies mysteriously. One night, she gives a ride to a wounded man and nurses him back to health, falling in love with him. The film is known for its expressionistic style and haunting atmosphere, with notable scenes including a dance with Death at a village Oktoberfest and a trek through a murky swamp.

The very talented director, Frank Wysbar (later Wisbar) fled from the Nazis in 1939 and relocated to America where his career was a failure. I guess he wasn’t Jewish and could not produce cultural hogwash, two main requirements to succeed in Hollywood.
