So endete eine Liebe (So Ended a Great Love) is a 1934 German historical romance film. The young Austrian Archduchess Marie-Louise (played by Paula Wessely) is in love with her cousin, Duke Franz von Modena (played by Willi Forst). However, Austrian statesman Klemens von Metternich (played by Gustaf Gründgens), the political advisor to the Austrian Emperor Franz I, arranges a marriage between Marie-Louise and the French Emperor Napoleon in order to prevent another war between their nations.
Beautiful costume drama. Gustave Grundgens is stellar as Count Metternich. The movie also promotes personal sacrifices for the sake of the state.
