Another gem by Veit Harlan. Heinrich George is stellar like always. There is a great sense of time and place here as we really feel we are in 16th Century Nuremburg. We can appreciate Bruno Mondi's work as a lighting cameraman. Some of the most striking features are the inspired use of the music of J. S. Bach, especially in the opening and closing sequences and the funeral procession at the end of the movie.
I would like to mention the excellent performance of Paul Henckels. It seems like the image of his character (a father-in-law) is taken straight from a typical Jewish family. The phrase of a father-in-law to a son-in-law who does not pay rent that he (the father-in-law) “does not need geniuses, but those who pay rent” deserves attention.
