Das Meer ruft (The Sea Calls/The Lake Calls), a 1933 German drama directed by Hans Hinrich, is a wartime film based on Henrik Ibsen's poem "Terje Vigen", adapting it to World War I in the Baltic Sea, where pilot Terje Wiggen (played by Heinrich George)faces hardship, betrayal by his crew, imprisonment by the German Navy, and ultimately seeks revenge and family reunion after years away.
The author and critic Karlheinz Wendtland remarked on Heinrich George’s performance: “They rob him of his wife, his child, his peace; they rob him of his happiness. Heinrich George fills the powerful space of this fateful plot with his great talent. When George appears, the earth trembles.”
