Der Student von Prag (The Student of Prague) is a 1935 German drama and horror film about a poor Prague student named Balduin who falls in love with an opera singer. A mysterious figure, Dr. Carpis, helps Balduin win her by helping him shed his "sentimental dreamer" self, which leads to wealth but also a descent into madness as he is haunted by his lost personality. The film is a remake of a classic 1913 silent film and is based on a story similar to the Faust legend.
Very good drama and horror movie. Several of the scenes are quite striking, and the performances by Anton Wolbrook and Theodor Loos are quite remarkable. The ending is particularly memorable as well.
