To New Shores (digital quality)
Zu neuen Ufern (also known as To New Shores) is a 1937 German melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk (as Detlef Sierck), in which Swedish star Zarah Leander plays Gloria Vane, a cabaret singer in 19th-century London who is deported to an Australian prison after taking the blame for a crime committed by her aristocratic lover. The film features Leander's singing, which was central to her icon status, and showcases Sirk's early mastery of melodrama and visual style, blending songs with dialogue in a manner influenced by Brecht and Weill.

Zu Neuen Ufern is a very emotionally involving film. Zara Leander, known for her stunning beauty and her deep singing voice, is sterling as always. In my opinion her musical numbers are way better than Marlene Dietrich’s. The film is a criticism of social injustice and cultural decadence in British society.
