The story follows Thea Iken (played by Gerda Maurus), a Prokuristin (a female executive or manager with power of attorney) working at a bank. When her boss, Bank Director Brüggemann, is murdered, suspicion falls directly on her. Surprisingly, Thea refuses to take the stand or speak up in her own defense during her trial. The film is a cinematic adaptation of the popular 1932 Weimar Republic novel of the same name written by Christa Anita Brück.
