June Fifth (forbidden by Allied military censorship)
Drama, Propaganda, War
The elderly and very famous Burgtheater actor Friedrich Mitterer has always lived for his art, but falls for the young and beautiful Leni Schindler. However, she is in love with the poor, young actor Josef Rainer, who lives as a lodger with her parents.
Unknown outside the German speaking world, this is one of Willi Forst’s major works and one of the best films of its day. The film craft is impeccable. Other than his parts in Jude Sus, this was also one of the Werner Krausses best performances – the lonely aging actor who slowly realizes that the world has moved on without him.
