“The wholesome air of the rather carefree, happy-go-lucky days of the Bavaria of almost 100 years ago may be inhaled by visitors to the Eighty-sixth Street Casino Theatre. And if they understand German, they also will enjoy the numerous funny situations built around husky and likable little Traudl Stark, who fills the title role in “Prinzessin Sissy,” and popular Otto Hoerbiger, as her screen father, Duke Maximilian. Princess Sissy was the favorite nickname of the lovely and unfortunate Empress Elizabeth of Austria and the Mondial film makers have imagined an episode timed in 1845, when she was 8 years old, just the age Traudl is listed at. As in her first picture, seen here last March, the aspiring Viennese “Shirley Temple” is kept well in hand by Director Fritz Thiery and is not allowed to relegate the excellent adult actors (among whom are Hanasi Knoteck, Gerda Maurus, Emil Stoehr and Otto Tressler) to the sidelines. Her work is entertaining and free from “cuteness.” The photography is outstanding. The views of courts, castles, countryside and the circus seem almost real.” NY Times, 1/14/1939.
