The Adventures of King Pausole / The Merry Monarch
Die Abenteuer des Königs Pausole (Original Title)
Die Abenteuer des Königs Pausole (The Adventures of King Pausole/The Merry Monarch) is a musical comedy/operetta film starring Emil Jannings as a hedonistic king with 365 wives, one for each day. When his favorite daughter elopes with an airman, he abandons his orderly life to find her, creating a chaotic adventure. It was a major international co-production filmed in multiple languages (French, German, and English) and is based on the 1901 novel by Pierre Louÿs.
The film features music in the style of a musical comedy, with some scenes originally deemed scandalous. Upon its release in Britain, it was withdrawn from circulation after only a week due to audience reception and censorship issues.
