The Night of the Great Love
Die Nacht der Grossen Liebe (Original Title)
Director Géza von Bolváry delivers the finest entertainment here too! A heart-wrenching love story set against the wonderful backdrop of Constantinople, today's Istanbul! The story follows a romantic complication triggered by the arrival of the naval cruiser Frauenlob in Constantinople. To celebrate the ship's arrival, the local Consul General throws a massive gala. The Consul General is deeply in love with a beautiful woman named Frau Thormaelen (played by opera star Jarmila Novotná). However, complications arise when Frau Thormaelen instead falls desperately in love with a much younger Holger Rhon (Gustav Fröhlich), a handsome naval First lieutenant from the ship. The romance takes a dramatic twist when Frau Thormaelen discovers that her own daughter, Ulla, is also completely infatuated with the exact same young officer.

The film is notable for being the final German movie featuring Czech soprano Jarmila Novotná before she discontinued her cinematic career to focus on opera and turn down Hollywood offers.
