Drama

The Rider on the White Horse (Der Schimmelreiter) is a drama film directed by Hans Deppe and Curt Oertel. Adapted from Theodor Storm’s classic 1888 novella, it follows the tragic fate of dike-warden Hauke Haien as he battles local superstition, societal resistance, and a catastrophic North Sea storm.
Directors Deppe and Oertel blended Storm’s original tragic narrative with “Blood and Soil” visual motifs, subtly reframing Hauke Haien’s absolute, uncompromising and self-sacrificing leadership to mirror contemporary political themes of the era. I do believe that it is a clear National Socialist movie in its essence.
