Tanz auf dem Vulkan (Dance on the Volcano) is directed by Hans Steinhoff and starring Gustaf Gründgens and Sybille Schmitz. Set in 1830 Paris, it follows popular actor Jean-Gaspard Deburau, who uses his stage performances to mock the oppressive King Charles X, leading to a dangerous love triangle.

Excellent production values. Some-what naive. Probably not the best Gustaf Gründgens’s performance. Gustaf Gründgens character’s most profound philosophical monologue about the actor’s role and mission in life is worth mentioning (56th minute). It is very touching and thought provoking.
